Rattan is one of the most sustainable materials available for furniture manufacturing. For more than 70 years rattan has been a fundamental part of our production, and from the early beginning sustainability has been a part of Sika-Design’s DNA.
According to the Indonesian people, rattan is hugging the rainforest. This is meant both literally as rattan grows like lianas around the trees but also figuratively speaking, because the use of rattan helps preserving the rainforest as there is no rattan production without the trees.
Rattan is a climbing plant that grows like lianas on trees and is considered one of the most sustainable materials available for furniture manufacturing as it regenerates in the span of 5 to 7 years. Furthermore it generates clean air by absorbing CO2 and produces up to 35 % more oxygen than a tree.
Rattan is solid in opposition to hollow bamboo, which makes it very durable and almost impossible to wear out. It comes in 600 different variants and from these only a few can be used in the production of furniture. At Sika-Design we only use the two best qualities called Tohiti and Manau.
Rattan is harvested by hand - the most eco-friendly way. When steamed for 10-15 minutes, rattan can be formed by hand using old traditional manufacturing techniques and a few simple tools.
All Sika-Design furniture is made with care for the environment and the well-being of people. Our furniture is handcrafted in Indonesia where wickerwork is a tradition-bound craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation.
We make an effort with every step, so that our furniture – both during the production, transportation and in your home – affects the environment as little as possible. To minimize the need for transportation, our manufacturing facilities are located near the Indonesian rainforest where 80% of the world’s rattan resources grow.
Our products are shipped directly from our factories to large exporting markets such as Australia, South Africa, South America, and USA. By shipping directly, we are able to reduce time in transit as well as our carbon footprint. We constantly optimize our processes in a sustainable direction through a general focus on responsible usage and production.
